If you are reading this post, I am sure that for you as well, eating is one of life’s pleasures, and when you travel, you don’t want to miss out on the typical dishes of the local cuisine of the city you visit.

So here are two menu suggestions for when you come to Siena, helping you choose from the many options you’ll find on restaurant menus so you’ll know what’s typical and what is more national or international.

LA RIBOLLITA

Ribollita is a traditional Tuscan soup, prepared with vegetables such as black cabbage, cannellini beans, tomatoes, carrots, and celery, along with stale bread. Once prepared, it is left to rest and reheated several times, achieving a more intense and rich flavor over time.

OSSO BUCO ALLA SENESE

Sienese-style ossobuco is a variation of the classic Milanese dish, where the veal shank is braised with white wine, celery, carrots, and onions. Typically Tuscan, it stands out for the addition of tomato, sage, and rosemary in flavoring the sauce, giving it a more rustic and aromatic taste.

BACIO DI SIENA

The Bacio di Siena is a semi-frozen dessert reminiscent of Baci Perugina chocolates in shape. It consists of a crunchy layer of chocolate to be broken with a spoon to reveal the interior made of whipped cream, candied fruits, and crushed nougat.

PICI

Pici” are a handmade pasta, made with flour and water, similar to thick spaghetti. Traditionally dressed with meat sauces or garlic, oil, and chili pepper, they are a specialty of Tuscan cuisine. Their rustic texture and artisanal preparation make them distinctive and highly appreciated.

FIORENTINA

The Fiorentina is a typical grilled meat cut of Tuscan cuisine. It is a beef steak cut from the central part of the thigh of the Chianina cow, a native cattle breed. The Fiorentina is characterized by rare cooking and an intense and succulent flavor.

RICCIARELLI

Ricciarelli from Siena are traditional Tuscan sweets, similar to cookies, made with ground almonds, sugar, egg white, and flavored with lemon zest and vanilla. These sweets have a soft interior and a crunchy crust on the outside. They are often served as an accompaniment to coffee or as a dessert after meals.

At this point, maybe you want some advice about restaurants. Well, to start and to be fair to everyone, I will recommend a historic restaurant in Siena where you can find all these dishes, located just around the corner from AmiRooms. It is the Ristorante Pier Pettinaio. You can go down and take a look at the menu.

I will be happy to share all the other restaurants with you in person, or perhaps you might discover one yourself (it has happened before) and suggest it to me.

If you stay at AmiRooms, it will be fun to choose a different restaurant each time from all those nearby.
