The Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena, located on the central Via di Città, is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture. Its charm is revealed only when passing by, with its smooth ashlar facade standing out in contrast to the rustic stonework of the ground floor.
The Palazzo, built between 1460 and 1478, has hosted various institutions, including the Bank of Italy and a Contemporary Art Center, before being acquired by Opera Laboratori in June 2024.
The building was constructed at the initiative of Caterina Piccolomini, sister of Pope Pius II, and its name refers to both Piccolomini sisters, although only Caterina was involved in its construction.
The architecture of the Palazzo features Renaissance elements, but also details in the Sienese Gothic style.
During the most recent restoration (2018), modern techniques such as lasers and poultices were used to preserve the original appearance of the facade. A mapping of the stonemasons’ marks was discovered, enriching the historical knowledge of the Palazzo.
Inside, the Palazzo delle Papesse is characterized by 19th-century decorated ceilings and an elegant courtyard.
The view from the terrace (altana) is spectacular, offering a complete panorama of the city. For this alone, it’s worth the ticket.
In fact, the reason I’m writing about it here is that the Palazzo delle Papesse reopened to the public on September 13, 2024 with the exhibition JULIO LE PARC. The Discovery of Perception. Works from 1958 to the Present.
The first of many exhibitions to come, we all hope, in Siena!
If you are a contemporary art lover, know that Siena offers this too.
All the information on the current exhibitions and activities at the Palazzo delle Papesse can be found here.
